Keeping moss happy: a simple care guide

Close up of a thriving moss terrarium with condensation on the glass

Moss is the heart of most terrariums. It carpets the floor, softens the stone, and holds the humidity that everything else depends on. The good news is that it asks for very little, as long as you understand what it actually wants.

Light, not sun

Moss grows on forest floors and shaded walls, so bright but indirect light suits it best. A spot near a window that never catches direct midday sun is ideal. Strong sun through glass cooks a terrarium quickly, so keep it out of hot windowsills.

Humidity over watering

Moss drinks through its surface rather than through roots, so it prefers humid air to soggy ground. In a closed terrarium the recycled moisture usually keeps it perfect. If the glass stops misting up, give it a light spray with rainwater or filtered water. Hard tap water can leave white marks on the leaves and the glass.

Small habits that help

  • Skip fertiliser. Moss does not need it, and it can feed unwanted mould.
  • Trim back faster plants so they do not shade the moss out.
  • If a patch browns, snip it away. Healthy moss spreads to fill the gap.
  • Turn the vessel a quarter every week or so for even growth.

Looked after gently, a moss carpet only gets richer with time. That slow, steady greening is the quiet reward of the whole hobby.
